Short answer: yes, you can run a Facebook Messenger bot for free in 2026, but the free plans are small. What Is a Facebook Messenger Bot?

A Facebook Messenger bot is software connected to your Facebook Page that replies to people who message the Page. Older bots ran on button menus and keyword rules. Most current ones add AI, so they can answer a question typed in plain words, pull the answer from your own business info, and hand the chat to a person when it needs one.

Three Meta rules apply to every Messenger bot, whichever tool you pick:

  • You need a Facebook Page. Bots connect to a Page, not a personal profile.
  • The person starts. A bot replies to people who message your Page or tap Get Started, and it can send one private reply to someone who commented on your post. It cannot cold-message strangers.
  • The messaging window. For most actions you have 24 hours to reply freely, or up to 7 days when someone messages you from a Click-to-Messenger ad. Outside the window, Meta only allows message tags for specific updates, one-time notifications the person asked for, and paid Sponsored Messages.   • Say it is a bot where the law requires it. Meta's policy calls out California and Germany, and recommends telling people they are talking to an automated service everywhere else too.

  • UChat is a low-cost multichannel builder. Pro includes 1,000 bot users and 5 team members, and every extra 1,000 bot users costs $5/mo below 5,000. It counts every bot user, not only active ones, and AI runs on your own OpenAI key, which you pay for separately.
  • Tidio is a website live chat tool first, with Messenger and Instagram integrations. Its plans count conversations a person on your team answers. The AI agent, Lyro, is a separate add-on from $39/mo for 50 AI conversations, and every account gets 50 Lyro conversations once for free.
  • Chatbase builds an AI support agent from your documents. Messenger and Instagram are included from the Hobby plan, not on Free. It bills by message credits, and removing its branding is a $99/mo add-on.

What Free Messenger Bot Plans Leave Out

Free plans are fine for testing whether a bot helps your Page at all. Here is what they usually hold back:

  • Volume. The real limit is how many people the bot can talk to: 25 active contacts a month on ManyChat Free, 50 conversations a month on ChatGenius Free, 200 bot users in total on UChat Free.
  • The channel itself. Some free plans leave Messenger out. Chatbase's free plan does not include Messenger or Instagram.
  • AI. Several tools keep AI replies off the free plan or sell AI as an add-on, so the free bot is buttons and keywords only.
  • Branding. ManyChat Free shows ManyChat branding; paid plans remove it. Tidio ($20/mo) and Chatbase ($99/mo) sell branding removal as an add-on.
  • Team access. ManyChat, UChat and Chatbase free plans are one user. Tidio is the exception, with up to 10 seats on Free.
  • Integrations. Calendar sync, CRM connections and Google Sheets are almost always on paid tiers.

Free vs Paid: How to Decide

Stay on a free plan if:

  • Your Page gets a handful of messages a week
  • You mostly want to test whether people will use a bot
  • You are fine replying to anything complicated yourself

Pay if:

  • You get more conversations than the free cap, or you run posts that pull in hundreds of comments
  • You want AI that answers real questions, not only button menus
  • Someone besides you handles messages
  • You want bookings, lead details or click data to flow somewhere useful

One thing to check before paying: what the price grows with. Contact-based and credit-based pricing go up as your audience grows or as the AI does more work. Conversation tiers stay at a fixed price, and any overage is something you choose to switch on. Neither is wrong, but they budget very differently after a post goes viral.

How to Set Up a Facebook Messenger Bot

Step 1: Pick a tool

Use the table above. If you mainly want questions answered, look at AI-first tools. If you want click-by-click funnels, a flow builder like ManyChat fits. If you want both, check that the tool does AI replies and comment-to-DM on Facebook, not just Instagram.

Step 2: Connect your Facebook Page

Every tool connects through Facebook Login. You choose the Page and approve the messaging permissions. You need to be an admin of the Page.

Step 3: Give the bot your business info

For flow-based bots, you build the conversation paths yourself. For AI bots, you give it what it should know. In ChatGenius you paste your website and it scans the site for services, prices and FAQs, and you can add FAQs and upload documents on paid plans.

Message your own Page from a second account, or use the tool's test chat, and try the questions your customers actually ask. Then decide whether the bot replies on its own or drafts replies for you to approve first. Starting with approval for a week is a sensible way to build trust in it.
