Your post finally took off. Hundreds of comments saying "INFO" or "PRICE", and your comment-to-DM automation was not on when most of them arrived. Maybe you set it up after the post was already moving, maybe you built it weeks ago and forgot to switch it on for this post. Either way, the people who commented early got nothing. Here is the part most people do not know: those commenters are not lost. Meta lets you send a private reply to a comment for up to 7 days after it was posted, and with the right tool you can re-scan the post and DM everyone your automation missed.

Why your automation missed those comments

Comment-to-DM tools work off real-time notifications. When someone comments, Instagram or Facebook sends the tool an event, the tool checks it against your keywords, and the DM goes out. That whole chain only exists for comments that arrive while the automation is live.

If the trigger was created after the comment, or it was paused, or the post simply was not attached to any automation yet, no event ever reached the tool. As far as it knows, the comment never happened.

ManyChat and most tools like it work exactly this way: automation applies to comments that come in after you turn it on. There is no button to run it against the comments already sitting on the post. The usual advice in that situation is to message everyone by hand, which brings us to the deadline.

The 7-day window: why you have not lost them yet

Meta's rules for business accounts allow one private reply per comment, for up to 7 days after the comment was posted. This applies to both Instagram and Facebook. Inside that window, a DM sent in response to a comment is a normal, sanctioned message. After 7 days, the door closes and a public reply is your only move.

So a viral post is not a lost cause, it is a countdown. A comment from 3 days ago can still get a DM today. A comment from 8 days ago cannot. Whatever you are going to do, it is worth doing this week, not next month.

Option 1: DM every commenter by hand

If the post has 20 comments, honestly, just do it manually. Open each profile, send a short message, done in half an hour.

It stops working at scale. At 300 comments you are looking at hours of repetitive work, and sending the same pasted message to hundreds of strangers in quick succession is exactly the pattern Instagram's spam systems watch for. Accounts get temporarily blocked from messaging for this. Slow, error-prone, and mildly risky is not a great combination.

Option 2: re-scan the post automatically

The playbook when a post is blowing up right now

If you are reading this because a post is taking off as we speak, do it in this order:

1. Turn the automation on first. New comments are still arriving. Get the trigger live so the tool catches everything from this moment forward, then deal with the backlog.

2. Rewind the backlog. Run the re-scan on the post so the early commenters get the same DM everyone else is getting.

3. Keep the link out of the first message. A DM to someone who does not follow you lands in their Message Requests folder, and a link in that first message hurts deliverability. Open with the thing they asked for, send the link after they reply.

4. Post a public reply too. A short public comment like "just sent it, check your DMs" does real work: people who do not follow you will not get a notification for a message request, and the public reply is what sends them looking for it. If your trigger already has a public reply configured, the re-scan posts it along with the DM, and you can switch that off for a large backfill if you would rather keep the comment section quiet.

Expect a drip, not a blast

200 paced DMs take a while to go out, and that is the point. The pacing is what keeps the sending inside Meta's limits and out of spam territory. Slower and delivered beats instant and flagged.

Frequently asked questions

Can ManyChat DM people who commented before the automation was on?

No. ManyChat's comment automation applies to comments made after it is active on a post. There is no re-scan for existing comments. If you set up ManyChat after a post took off, the earlier commenters have to be messaged manually or with a tool that supports retroactive scanning.

How far back can you DM commenters?

7 days. That is Meta's limit on private replies to comments, and it applies to every tool and to manual replies alike. No tool can legitimately DM someone whose comment is older than that.

Does it work if the commenter does not follow me?

Yes. The DM is allowed because they commented, not because they follow you. It will land in their Message Requests folder rather than their main inbox, which is why the public "check your DMs" reply is worth adding.

Is this allowed by Instagram?

Yes. Private replies to comments are an official Meta feature for business accounts, and the 7-day window is Meta's own rule. You get one private reply per comment; if the person answers, a normal conversation opens from there. What is not allowed is scraping commenters and cold-messaging them outside that system, which is a good reason to avoid tools that work that way.

My automation was on but skipped some comments. Can I catch those too?

Yes. A re-scan does not care why a comment was missed, whether the automation did not exist yet, was paused, or a platform hiccup dropped the notification. If the comment matches the trigger, is inside the 7-day window, and that person has not already been DMed, it gets picked up.
