Two Instagram automation problems keep coming back to the same place: the **Meta Business Portfolio**. In the first, your automation says it is connected but nothing fires, no DMs, no comment replies, no new contacts. In the second, you cannot connect at all and Meta tells you **"You need full control of this business portfolio"**, even though you are sure you have it. Here is what is going on in each case and what has actually fixed it for people.

### The short version

- **Connected but silent** right after you added your Instagram account to a Business Portfolio: people who removed the account from the portfolio saw events come back within about an hour. That fix has a cost, covered below.
- **"You need full control of this business portfolio"** when connecting: the portfolio that owns your Instagram account is often not the one you think. Find the owner first, then fix access there.

## What a Business Portfolio Has to Do With Your DMs

A Business Portfolio (Meta's newer name for Business Manager) is a container that owns business assets: Facebook Pages, Instagram accounts, ad accounts, and the people and apps allowed to use them. When an automation tool connects to your Instagram through Facebook, Meta checks who owns the account and what access you have to it before it hands over messaging permissions.

Two details trip people up:

- **An Instagram account is owned by one portfolio at a time.** Other portfolios can be given access as partners, but only one is the owner.
- **Portfolios get created without you noticing.** Running an ad, setting up a shop, or letting an agency manage your account can each leave a portfolio behind. It is common to find two or three when you go looking.

So when you move an account into a portfolio, or connect while it sits in one you do not control, the thing that changes is on Meta's side, not inside your automation tool. That is why reconnecting from the tool alone often does nothing.

## Problem 1: Connected, But Nothing Fires

**What it looks like:** your tool shows Instagram as connected. Keyword DMs, comment automations, and follow-ups all stop at once. No new contacts appear. In the reports we have seen, it started right after the Instagram account was added to a Business Portfolio.

In late September 2026, a user on the ManyChat community forum described exactly this: zero Instagram events reaching the account from September 21, with the channel still showing as connected. A second user reported the same thing in the thread. Before finding the cause, they had already tried the usual fixes:

- Refreshing permissions from inside the tool
- Turning the Instagram channel off and back on
- Removing the app's permissions in Facebook and granting them again

None of it worked. What did work was **removing the Instagram account from the Business Portfolio** it had just been added to. Comment automations, DMs, and new contacts came back, though it took **about an hour** after the removal before events started flowing again. A ManyChat community moderator confirmed the fix in the thread.

### Read this before you remove anything

The same moderator warned that taking the account out of the portfolio may affect features that depend on the portfolio connection, including [Follow to DM](/blog/manychat-follow-to-dm-not-working/) and other Meta-connected features. If you added the account to a portfolio on purpose, for ads, a shop, or an agency, removing it can break that instead. Know what the portfolio is doing for you before you pull the account out.

### How to check whether this is your problem

1. **Look at the date.** Did everything go quiet on the same day the account was added to a portfolio? If you are not sure when that happened, check with whoever manages your ads or your agency.
2. **Check that Instagram itself is fine.** Send a DM to your account from a personal account. If it arrives in the Instagram app but your tool never sees it, the break is between Meta and the tool, which is where the portfolio sits.
3. **Wait before you judge.** If you do remove the account, give it at least an hour before deciding it did not work.

If your automation stopped and there was no portfolio change around that date, this is probably not your issue. Start with our [Instagram DM automation troubleshooting guide](/blog/instagram-dm-automation-not-working-2026/) instead, or [comment-to-DM not working](/answers/instagram-comment-to-dm-not-working) if only comment replies stopped.

## Problem 2: "You Need Full Control of This Business Portfolio"

**What it looks like:** you try to connect Instagram to an automation tool and Meta shows one of these:

- "You need full control of this business portfolio"
- "We couldn't connect your account" or "Something went wrong"
- Meta fails to open the Instagram account and tells you to try again later

The confusing part is that most people who hit this *do* have full control of a portfolio, and their Facebook Page connects fine. Only Instagram fails.

That split is the clue. If the Page connects and Instagram does not, the problem is specific to the Instagram account. The error is about the portfolio that **owns the Instagram account**, and that is often a different portfolio from the one you manage day to day.

### How to fix it

1. **Confirm the account is Professional.** In the Instagram app, open Settings and check the account type. It has to be Business or Creator. Personal accounts cannot connect to messaging tools at all, and the error you get does not always say so.
2. **Find every portfolio you belong to.** Open [Meta Business Suite](https://business.facebook.com) and use the portfolio switcher. If you see more than one, check each.
3. **Find the one that owns the Instagram account.** In each portfolio's settings, look under Accounts, then Instagram accounts. The account will only be owned by one of them.
4. **Get full control there.** If you are not a full-control person in the owning portfolio, whoever is (a former agency, a co-founder, an old employee) has to give you that access, or move the account to a portfolio you do control.
5. **Connect again.** Once your access in the owning portfolio is right, run the connection from your tool again. If you still see "try again later", that one is usually a temporary Meta issue and clears on its own once the access is sorted.

## Which Problem Do You Have?

| What you see | Likely cause | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Shows connected, nothing fires, started when the account joined a portfolio | The portfolio change broke event delivery | Remove the account from that portfolio, then wait an hour |
| "You need full control of this business portfolio" | The Instagram account is owned by a portfolio where you lack full control | Find the owning portfolio and get full control there |
| Page connects, Instagram does not | Account type, or a different portfolio owns the Instagram account | Check Professional account, then find the owner |
| "Try again later" | Usually temporary on Meta's side | Fix access first, retry later |

## If You Use ChatGenius

The same Meta rules apply to every tool that connects through Facebook, including ours. Two things are different on our side:

- **You can connect Instagram without a Facebook Page.** If you run on Instagram only, use **Connect with Instagram** in the portal. It gives you Instagram DMs and comments. Our [connection guide](/docs/connect-instagram-facebook) covers which option fits your setup.
- **Connection errors say what went wrong.** When no Page comes back from Facebook, the portal tells you to check your Page selection and, if the Page lives inside a Business Portfolio, to make sure you are a Page admin within that portfolio, instead of a generic error.

## FAQ

### Will removing my Instagram account from a Business Portfolio delete anything?

Removing it from the portfolio does not delete the Instagram account or its posts. It does remove the portfolio's access, which can affect ads, shops, partner access, and portfolio-dependent features like Follow to DM.

### How long after the fix do automations start working again?

In the reported case, about an hour after the account was removed from the portfolio. Do not keep changing settings during that window.

### I have full control of my portfolio. Why does Meta say I do not?

Because the error is about the portfolio that owns the Instagram account, which may not be the one you are looking at. Check every portfolio in the switcher.

### Is this a ManyChat problem?

The reports we cite came from ManyChat users, but both problems come from how Meta handles portfolios and permissions. Any tool that connects Instagram through Facebook works under the same rules.
